KITTELSENS BILDER
Dette verket ble skrevet for Kragerø Musikkorps i 2022 og urfremført 16. april 2023 i Kragerø kirke. Stykket består av fire satser, hver inspirert av et kunstverk av Theodor Kittelsen. Flere av motivene har sterk lokal tilknytning til Kragerø, der Kittelsen hentet inspirasjon fra skjærgården og landskapet rundt byen.

Første sats er basert på «Nøkken», den mytiske skikkelsen fra norsk folketro som lokker mennesker ut i vannet og i døden. Motivet knyttes til Jomfruland utenfor Kragerø, ved Tårntjern. Om man faktisk kan møte Nøkken der, vites ikke.

Andre sats, «Måneskinn», har også sitt motiv fra Jomfruland. Her har Kittelsen fanget månelyset en uvanlig stille natt på øya ytterst i havgapet.

Tredje sats bygger på «Vårdag ved havet», et naturmotiv fra Skåtøy, like ved Jomfruland. Kittelsen bodde i perioder på Skåtøy, og området satte tydelige spor i hans kunst.

Fjerde og siste sats er inspirert av «Langt der borte så han noe lyse og glitre», også kjent som «Soria Moria», fra Asbjørnsen og Moes eventyrsamling. Kittelsens fremstilling av Askeladden som skuer Soria Moria i det fjerne, har for mange blitt et sterkt symbol på framtidshåp og drømmen om å lykkes i livet.

THE PICTURES OF KITTELSEN
This work was written for the Kragerø Wind Band in 2022 and received its world premiere on April 16, 2023, in Kragerø Church. The piece consists of four movements, each inspired by a work of art by Theodor Kittelsen. Several of the motifs have a strong local connection to Kragerø, where Kittelsen drew inspiration from the archipelago and the surrounding landscape.

The first movement is based on The Nøkken (the Nixie), the mythical figure from Norwegian folklore known for luring people into the water and to their death. The motif is associated with Jomfruland, just outside Kragerø, near Tårntjern. Whether one might actually encounter the Nøkken there remains unknown.

The second movement, Moonlight, is also inspired by a motif from Jomfruland. Here, Kittelsen captured the moonlight on an unusually still night on the island at the very edge of the open sea.

The third movement is based on Spring Day by the Sea, a nature motif from Skåtøy, close to Jomfruland. Kittelsen lived on Skåtøy during periods of his life, and the area left a clear imprint on his artistic work.

The fourth and final movement is inspired by Far Away He Saw Something Shimmer and Glow, also known as Soria Moria, from the fairy-tale collection of Asbjørnsen and Moe. Kittelsen’s depiction of Askeladden gazing toward Soria Moria in the distance has, for many, become a powerful symbol of hope for the future and the dream of succeeding in life.

IDAR TORSKANGERPOLL
Idar Torskangerpoll (f. 1970) er komponist og arrangør med bred erfaring innen musikk for korps, samt for film, reklame, TV og videospill. De siste 30 årene har han utgitt flere hundre verk for korps, fra musikk for aspirant- og juniorkorps til større konkurransestykker for brassband og janitsjarkorps.

I tillegg er Idar aktiv som dirigent, foredragsholder og dommer i korpskonkurranser. Han er utdannet ved universitetene i Trondheim og Oslo, og har en mastergrad i filmmusikk fra Thinkspace Education ved Arts University Bournemouth (UK).

IDAR TORSKANGERPOLL
Idar Torskangerpoll (b. 1970) is a composer and arranger with extensive experience in music for wind bands and brass bands, as well as for film, advertising, television, and video games. Over the past 30 years, he has published several hundred works for bands, ranging from music for beginner and youth ensembles to major competition pieces for brass band and wind band.

In addition to his work as a composer, Idar is active as a conductor, lecturer, and adjudicator at band competitions. He studied at the universities of Trondheim and Oslo and holds a master’s degree in film music from Thinkspace Education at Arts University Bournemouth (UK).
